WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED

When we create a Garden, we become a Community of Caring — a Learning Center, and we learn...

How to make a garden;
how to work together;
how to take care of living things: flowers, vegetables, butterflies, worms
how to care....

Kids learn gardening.When we come together in the creation of any art form — garden, mosaic, mural, pathway of water features — a community of caring people is born. The quality of work we create generates pride, self-reliance, and a genuine respect for plants, creatures, and ourselves.

We find that young children of elementary school age are the most receptive gardeners; this is the time to teach basic principles of natural history. It is much harder to do this at high school age if no initial interest has been kindled. At all ages, a passionate teacher is needed, both to stimulate interest and to teach how to maintain a garden. This involves the on-going caring, the learning of what is necessary— from making soil from compost, planting, watering, weeding the crop, to harvesting the vegetables or fruits, to mulching the winter garden.
