BE A PART
During the past twelve years of our existence, we have seen new recognition all over the country of the value of gardens.
The word "greening" is becoming fashionable: "green building," "green energy." It means new ways of thinking about things, of saving energy, saving water, recycling. It also galvanizes us to rescue endangered species of wildlife, find ways of transforming polluted soils and waters, leaching out poisonous metals, cleansing our air, use our natural energies — sun, wind, waves — to generate our manufacturing powers.
We all can participate in these processes of greening. We can help by
-
not wasting so much water, electricity, clothing, materials
-
donating to Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms, where up-front funding in return for crops can keep a farmer from having to mortgage away his property during a bad year
-
helping to supply food banks for the homeless and hungry with produce from our gardens
We can mobilize our schools to put the Earth, the environment, and ecology at the center of our curriculum — in fact, at the center of our lives and recognize the Earth as the provider of our food, clothing, shelter, medicines — this means re-teaching all of us.
